What is a Chemical Peel?
Each of us has our own unique skin issues, but chemical peels improve almost any condition. Chemical peels work by removing damaged skin cells. When healing takes place, the skin looks healthier and more radiant. The right type of chemical peel for your skin depends on the severity of the problem. Light, medium and deep chemical peels are available. The double board-certified plastic surgeons at Facial Aesthetic Concepts discuss why the results of chemical peels are so amazing.
What are the Benefits of a Chemical Peel?
1. Wrinkles
A medium facial peel is the best choice for patients with fine lines and wrinkles. The new skin replacing the treated skin comes back in smoother, with a noticeable decrease in wrinkles.
While a light peel removes skin only from the top layer, or epidermis, a medium peel removes dead cells from part of the dermis. It targets the upper area of the dermis, the middle layer of skin.
Patients with severe wrinkling may opt for a deep chemical peel. This stronger peel can result in one to two weeks of healing and precise aftercare.
2. Acne Treatment
Battling acne requires a combination approach, and chemical peels can prove a critical piece of ammunition. A light alpha- or beta-hydroxy peel results in rapid exfoliation. The dead skin cells that clog pores and cause pimples and blackheads shed after a peel, reducing acne flare-ups.
If acne has created scars, a medium-strength peel can help diminish them.
3. Boosting Collagen Production
Collagen is the body’s most abundant protein. It plumps up skin, making it more youthful. Collagen levels decline with aging, so skin becomes less elastic and more subject to sagging.
Chemical peels jumpstart collagen production, leaving skin firmer and more supple.
4. Hyperpigmentation
If you’ve spent too much time in the sun, you may pay for it with uneven skin tone, or hyperpigmentation. That’s the darker patches of skin caused by melanin overproduction. Freckling is an example of hyperpigmentation.
Hormones may play a role in hyperpigmentation, as can environmental damage. Whatever the source, an uneven skin tone adds years to the face.
Chemical peels can improve the appearance of any sort of sun damage.
5. Better Skincare Product Performance
After a chemical peel, you’ll notice your skincare products become more effective. That’s because the exfoliation rids the skin of dead cells that interfere with moisturizers and serums’ ability to fully penetrate the skin.
