What Is BOTOX Cosmetic?
BOTOX Cosmetic is similar to many other BOTOX treatments, but also different in a number of key ways. BOTOX blocks nerve activity in muscles where it is injected, so it is often used to treat muscle spasms and heavy sweating. BOTOX Cosmetic similarly blocks nerve activity in facial muscles, by targeting frown lines and other facial lines, BOTOX Cosmetic reduces facial muscle movement and treats those lines.
We squint and frown naturally thanks to muscles in our face. BOTOX Cosmetic works to block the neural activity, effectively softening or relaxing those muscles so that the lines and wrinkles they cause become reduced.
BOTOX Cosmetic was first approved for cosmetic use by the FDA in the United States in 2002. It has been approved for cosmetic use in a total of 98 countries and is the #1 selling treatment of this kind in the world. BOTOX Cosmetic is one of the best options available for the treatment of lines and wrinkles on the upper portion of the face. Thousands of patients at our clinic and millions of others around the world have been treated successfully.
Treatment Techniques and Additional Options
Prior to treatment, you’ll have a brief consultation with one of our medical providers to review your medical history and discuss your cosmetic concerns. The consult is a great time to lay out your goals for your BOTOX Cosmetic/Dysport treatments and ask any questions you may have about the process.
When you receive your injection, the active ingredient goes into your facial muscles and relaxes them. Relaxed muscles are muscles that cannot contract; no contraction means no wrinkles or lines.
You may find that the treatment feels like a pinch on your face in the treatment area. Our specialists use the smallest needles made, making treatment very comfortable.
Many people who have lines and wrinkles around their eyes and forehead also have signs of aging in other parts of the face. Injectable fillers can help to replace lost volume in the lower portion of the face, fill in wrinkles around the mouth, and plump up the lips. Skin tightening treatments also help to achieve a more youthful complexion. BOTOX is a very effective treatment option, but combining multiple treatment modalities often results in the best possible outcome for our patients.

Nasal SurgeriesBest Candidates for BOTOX
Both men and women can benefit from BOTOX Cosmetic and Dysport. Ideal patients should be in generally good physical health and should not smoke. All candidates for BOTOX cosmetic treatments must be over 18 years old.
Most people have no issues with BOTOX Cosmetic treatments, but you should avoid treatment if you:
- Are pregnant or nursing
- Have deep facial scars
- Experience weakness in the treatment area muscles
- Have drooping eyelids
- Have an infection in the treatment area
- Are experiencing bladder issues, including infection and difficulty urinating
- Have very thick facial skin
- Have heart disease
- Have noticeable facial asymmetry
- Have a history of neuromuscular diseases such as multiple sclerosis or myasthenia gravis
During your initial consultation, we will determine if you have any of these issues that can prevent treatment. Make sure to provide a complete medical history as well as any supplements and medications you take. A thorough understanding of your medical history will allow us to make sure you have the best and safest experience possible.
For the most part, BOTOX and Dysport are recommended for people who want to treat “active wrinkles” — lines and creases that have formed recently or aren’t extremely advanced or deep. But recent evidence and studies have suggested another use for BOTOX and Dysport — use as a preventative measure to help keep those lines and wrinkles from forming in the first place. So even if you’re not seeing considerable signs of aging, you may still benefit from regular treatments of BOTOX or Dysport.

The idea of getting an injection of BOTOX Cosmetic or Dysport may be scary for some people. After all, no one likes needles. But if you haven’t had treatment before, you’ll probably be amazed at how easy and comfortable these treatments are. Our friendly and professional staff are dedicated to making sure you have a comfortable experience. Our facility is held to the highest standards of health and safety, and our patients are the heart of everything we do.
Cost
We believe in making BOTOX and Dysport treatments as accessible as possible for our clients. The cost of treatment not only covers the amount of product you need but also the training and expertise of our staff. Just like every client’s face is different, so the cost of every client’s BOTOX Cosmetic treatment is different. Our experienced team has administered more than 850,000 units of Botox.
We charge by “unit”, meaning that we charge for the amount of BOTOX Cosmetic or Dysport used in a treatment. Some clinics charge by “area” instead, based on the areas that are being treated. We find that charging by unit allows for a clearer understanding of how much product is being used as well as more customized appointments.
Allergan, the maker of BOTOX Cosmetic, also offers a rewards program called Brilliant Distinctions. Every BOTOX Cosmetic treatment earns you points that you can use to get a discount for future treatments.
Recovery
BOTOX Cosmetic and Dysport are minimally invasive treatments. You will be able to return to your regular routine after the completion of your treatment appointment, and appointments can be conveniently scheduled over your lunch break or right at the end of the day before you head home.
There are a few things you can do to help your treatment be more effective afterward. Ensure you keep your head upright for four hours after treatment. Also, be sure not to massage the treated area in the first few days in order to prevent the diffusion of the BOTOX Cosmetic or Dysport product.
Typical side effects following treatments are minor. You might experience some redness that typically goes away in a few hours. You may experience some slight bruising following your treatment. Be sure to avoid aspirin, Advil and other blood thinning products for a week prior to your treatment to minimize the risk of bruising.
Results
A few days after treatment, you should notice that dynamic facial lines have been reduced. This effect generally lasts between 3 to 6 months. After that, follow up treatments can help you maintain your smoother skin long term. The ideal frequency of treatment will depend upon how quickly your body processes BOTOX Cosmetic and removes its effects.
Do not worry about your face looking stiff or unnatural. Our trained and licensed staff will make sure you still look like you — just a you with fewer, less pronounced frown lines. In the right hands, BOTOX Cosmetic and Dysport can have a subtle effect that won’t drastically alter your appearance.
How to Prepare for Your Treatment
Preparation for BOTOX Cosmetic or Dysport treatment is relatively minimal. If you smoke, you should avoid smoking for at least a few days prior to treatment, as cigarette use will increase the likelihood of bruising. Ensure you do all your daily exercising at least four hours prior to your appointment.
There are several medications you should avoid before BOTOX Cosmetic or Dysport treatments. This includes NSAIDs, blood thinners, and muscle relaxants. These medications can cause bruising and bleeding during treatment. If you are planning to have treatment on the day of your initial consultation, please make sure to get a complete list of medications to avoid before your visit. When you come in for your appointment, make sure to list all medications and dietary supplements you are taking so that we can ensure your treatments are effective and safe.
Clean your face gently but thoroughly before you go to your appointment. Use a gentle soap or cleanser. Pat it dry using a soft towel. You do not want to irritate your skin, only get it clean. This will make it easier for us to prepare the treatment area.
What to Ask at Your Consultation
Before having a BOTOX Cosmetic or Dysport treatment, it’s important to know the facts and ask the right questions. Not only can it help you be less nervous and better understand the results, but it can also help you to know that your provider is an expert. Here are some questions you should plan to ask during your consultation:
- What kind of results can I expect to see? How long will they last?
- How soon will I start to see results after treatment?
- What is recovery like for BOTOX Cosmetic?
- What are the possible side effects?
- If I am taking a certain medication/supplement, should I still get treatment?
- I’m afraid of needles. What should I do?
- How often do I need to get treatments?
Post Treatment Instructions
Post-treatment recovery after you’ve had BOTOX Cosmetic or Dysport is very simple. There are no bandages, special creams or other immediate signs that you’ve had a treatment performed. It’s important to keep your head upright for about 4 hours after you undergo treatment so that the injection does not migrate. Also, do not perform any strenuous activity such as exercise for at least 4 hours after treatment.
Do not massage or rub the treatment area for several days. BOTOX Cosmetic and Dysport are targeted treatments that are injected into the area in which they are most effective. Rubbing or massaging your face can cause the injection to disperse, which will minimize its effects. Also, be very careful when touching the site of an injection. They heal most quickly when left alone.
Limit your alcohol consumption following treatment. Drinking too much alcohol causes fluid retention, which can lead to bruising in the treatment area. Plan on a quiet evening following a BOTOX Cosmetic treatment to ensure the best effect.
If you are planning on undergoing other cosmetic procedures such as microdermabrasion, a chemical peel, or a facial, wait at least 24 hours. This helps to prevent bruising and also helps BOTOX Cosmetic to remain in its planned treatment area.
Also make sure to follow our instructions about the use of any blood thinners and NSAIDs you may be taking. If taken shortly after a BOTOX Cosmetic treatment, these medications may cause bruising or other issues. You should be able to resume your medication routine after a short grace period.
Watch for potential side effects. BOTOX Cosmetic is a very safe treatment, but there can be temporary side effects. We will cover these with you during your consult. If you experience any side effects and they last more than a day or are getting worse, please contact us immediately.
FAQs
Is BOTOX Cosmetic only for women?
Both men and women undergo regular BOTOX Cosmetic and Dysport treatments. They are proven to help improve facial lines for everyone and have undergone years of medical study and trials, in addition to over 15 years of real-world application. We’ve found that more and more men are coming in to get BOTOX Cosmetic treatments every year.
Will BOTOX Cosmetic paralyze my face?
Properly administered, BOTOX Cosmetic and Dysport can result in a naturally refreshed look, not the cliché frozen face that you might see in tabloids or on TV. The inability to move the eyebrows or other areas of the face only occurs when too much of the treatment has been administered. At Facial Aesthetic Concepts, we do a careful facial analysis to ensure that we only use the amount of BOTOX Cosmetic or Dysport that is truly necessary.
What are the potential side effects?
Almost everyone who has a BOTOX or Dysport treatment experience no side effects. But it’s good to be on the lookout for any of these conditions and contact us if they persist or get worse:
- Pain, swelling, or bruising at the treatment site
- Droopy eyelids
- Uneven eyebrows
- Vision issues
- Trouble swallowing
- Crooked smile
- Drooling
- Headache
- Flu-like symptoms
- Eye dryness
- Excessive tearing
- Muscle weakness
- Loss of bladder control
How much can I expect the treatment to cost?
Most BOTOX Cosmetic or Dysport treatments range between $200 to $600. We customize every treatment to you and your goals, which means that the units used vary from client to client. We don’t believe in ‘one size fits all’ cosmetic treatments.
Do you do anything to numb the face before BOTOX Cosmetic treatments?
We can use ice to numb the injection site or even apply a topical numbing agent if that will help you to feel most at ease. Your comfort and safety are our priority.
What kind of results can I expect and how long will they last?
BOTOX Cosmetic and Dysport help to reduce facial fine lines such as frown lines, crow’s feet, and forehead wrinkles. Most people find that the results from a treatment last about 4 months before a follow up treatment is necessary to achieve smoother skin again. The effect is subtle and does not leave your face looking unnaturally smooth or change its shape.
How frequently do I need to get BOTOX Cosmetic treatments?
Most of our patients schedule their BOTOX Cosmetic or Dysport treatments every 3 to 4 months to ensure the results remain looking fresh. For some people, results may last longer after they have gone through several rounds of treatments.
