Nose surgery, or rhinoplasty, is one of the most common types of plastic surgery among men. Rhinoplasty can be done to address medical or cosmetic issues related to the nose. In some cases, rhinoplasty corrects breathing problems or structural defects that can cause discomfort or health issues.
However, most nose-reshaping surgeries performed in the United States are done purely for cosmetic reasons. Several reasons men get rhinoplasty include: changing the size of the nose, changing the width of the bridge, adjusting the shape of the nostrils, or removing bumps from the bridge of the nose.
Rhinoplasty can change the entire look of the face because the nose is at the focal point and center. Because the nose is so important to the framing of the face, natural-looking results are paramount when considering nose surgery. Our surgeons understand just how important the nose is when it comes to bringing balance to a man’s face.

Nose Surgery Overview
Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure that is used to reshape the nose to correct a multitude of concerns. Depending on the needs of the patient, your surgeon will resculpt the bone and nasal cartilage to increase or decrease the size of the nose, reposition the angle of the tip of the nose, and/or change the shape of the nostrils, bridge or tip. In doing so, your surgeon is able to help men find a more pleasing appearance or correct breathing issues.
Best Candidates for Nose Surgery
The best candidates for nose surgery are men of varying ages — including older adolescents (with parental permission) — wanting to address aesthetic concerns or needing to correct functional nasal issues. Men considering rhinoplasty should have realistic goals and expectations and have a clear understanding of the surgical procedure.
What to Expect with Nose Surgery
Before your nose surgery, you will have a one-on-one consultation to discuss your health history and examine your nose and facial bone structure to determine the best option for you. Options can be discussed based on your nose, what you want corrected, and what you are trying to achieve.
Some surgeries will require incisions on the inside of the nose, which is called a closed rhinoplasty. In contrast, an open rhinoplasty is performed via incisions that are made on the underside of the nose where the cartilage separates the nostrils. In either case, the scars are small and are barely visible once full recovery and healing are complete. Dr. Gangnes will help you decide which technique will achieve the best results.
Your Rhinoplasty Recovery & Results
This cosmetic procedure is performed on an outpatient basis. Depending on the deformity and thickness of the skin, the tip of the nose continues to improve and becomes better defined months after the procedure.
Your surgeon will discuss specific details of what you can expect from your rhinoplasty, but some of the basics will always be the same. For example, you will have a splint and likely some packing inside of your nose in order to protect the new shape of your nose. Both will be removed about a week after the surgery.
You will have some bruising and swelling around your nose and eyes. While the bulk of that will go away within a few weeks to a month, it is possible to have some swelling for up to a year. The reason for this is that your nose needs adequate time to adjust to its new shape and contours.
Your surgeon will keep a close eye on swelling and recovery in your follow-up visits. If you have any additional questions or concerns, we encourage you to call us at any time.
