Facial Aesthetic Concepts is one of Orange County’s most trusted providers of injectable treatments, offering (among others) Botox, Dysport, Juvederm, Restylane and Radiesse. While having various injectable options allows our team of doctors, nurses and medical estheticians to address a wide range of imperfections on the skin, we understand that having this many choices can be confusing to patients who are unfamiliar with the differences. In this blog, our team offers guidance on selecting the best injectables.
Two Main Types of Injectables
Most injectables fit into two categories:
Neurotoxins (which include Botox and Dysport) temporarily immobilize facial muscles. Because muscle movements are responsible for causing some lines and wrinkles to form on the face, freezing specific muscles gives the lines an opportunity to fade from visibility.
Dermal fillers (which include Juvederm and Restylane) add volume to the skin with hyaluronic acid. This extra volume minimizes fine lines and wrinkles while softening features.
Location of Wrinkles
The most important factor in choosing an injectable is the location of the wrinkles you want to diminish. Neurotoxin injectables are appropriate for crow’s feet, vertical frown lines and horizontal forehead lines. Meanwhile, dermal fillers are suitable for wrinkles on the cheeks, the nasolabial folds (the lines that extend from the nose to the mouth) and marionette lines.
The Depth of the Wrinkles
Injectable treatments should be selected based upon the severity of the wrinkles. Whereas Restylane is often good for mild wrinkles, Juvederm is better suited for moderate wrinkles. For the deepest wrinkles, Restylane or Juvederm Voluma achieve the best results. When it comes to neurotoxins, Dysport is the better choice for mild to moderate lines, while Botox is better for moderate to severe lines.
Duration of Results
One final factor to consider is the length of time the results last. Botox and Dysport last three or four months before the muscles re-mobilize and lines reappear. Juvederm and Restylane can last around half a year, while Radiesse’s effects can linger for well over a year. All dermal fillers and neurotoxins require periodic appointments to maintain the results.
