What is Breast Augmentation?

Breast augmentation is one of the most popular plastic surgeries because many social tastes have likened bigger breasts to more beauty and femininity. As a result, a lot of women are unhappy with their breast size and opt for increasing their size. It is also in high demand since the rise of breast cancer cases as women now have the option of rebuilding their bosom after a mastectomy. Breast augmentation is done by inserting implants made of either saline or silicone. They look natural and soft to the touch, like natural breast tissue. Read below on the varying types of implants and their associated risks and benefits.

Steps of Selecting Your Implants

Breast augmentation patients must choose the type of implants, their size, placement, and the incision’s placement.

Type of Implant

Saline implants are filled with sterile salt water. They can be filled after being placed in the breast, which allows for smaller incisions. They pose no health risks if they accidentally rupture.

Silicone implants are filled with a gel-like substance that more closely resembles and feels like real breast tissue. They can be round or teardrop-shaped (form stable implants), the latter mimicking the slope of a youthful breast.

Implant Size

Implant size varies from small, medium, and large to very large. During the consultation, your personal surgeon will show you the different cup sizes to help you decide what size best fits your proportions and anatomy.

Implant Shape

The most common shapes are round or teardrop. Each shape has a different incision associated with it, which should be considered when making a decision.

Implant Placement

There are two common implant placements: behind the breast tissue, known as sub-glandular, or behind the pectoralis chest muscles, known as sub-muscular. Most augmentation is sub-muscular, as it reduces the chances of scar tissue and infection.

Incision Placement

Inframammary or sub-pectoral: This avoids the mammary glands and, hence, any bacterial infection, breast hardening, or capsular contraction.

  • Peri-areolar: As the name suggests, this incision is made around the areola. It is usually chosen by women with smaller breasts who do not have under-breast folds; hence, the incision cannot hide under the breast. It is important to note that some patients have reported trouble with breast-feeding after this type of incision.
  • Trans-axillary: This is a popular approach for those who do not want visible scars, as this is an entry point through the underarms. However, given the sweat glands, the incision also has the highest infection and capsular contracture rate.
  • Trans-umbilical breast augmentation (TUBA): In this method, the incision is made through the belly button. Patients who are getting this incision can also consider a tummy tuck as a combined procedure.

  • Expanding your social and professional opportunities
  • Improving the symmetry between your breasts
  • Making your cleavage more prominent
  • Offering the chance to expand your wardrobe with new clothes that suit your new body type
  • Providing you with curvier, more feminine-shaped breasts
  • Restoring breast volume after trauma or a mastectomy

Who Are the Best Candidates for Breast Augmentation?

The best candidates for breast augmentation surgery are women who are looking for a solution to breasts that makes them feel uncomfortable or unhappy with their appearance. Women who have had considerable weight loss, who have had children, who have noticed changes to their breasts due to age, or who never developed the way they would have liked to make ideal candidates for breast implants often. Breast implants can also help address uneven or asymmetrical breasts.

A breast augmentation can allow women to achieve greater breast size, better shape, increased fullness, and a more balanced figure. To address sagging breasts, a combination of breast augmentation with breast lift surgery is an excellent choice for women who would like to see an increase in breast volume and restore their breasts to a more youthful position.
You may be a good candidate for breast augmentation surgery if you’re a healthy woman who is maintaining a stable weight and would like to see a change in the size and shape of your breasts. Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding are not good candidates for this procedure.

Lastly, women who have had a mastectomy due to cancer or other trauma can augment their volume and have the feeling of a bosom again.

What’s the First Step?

The first step in getting a breast augmentation in Orange County is to schedule a consultation at Facial Aesthetic Concepts. During your consultation, your plastic surgeon will examine your breasts to determine if an augmentation is right for you. They will assess your breast size and shape, the quality of your skin, and the placement of your nipples and areolas to determine the best course of action to help you achieve your desired results. Your consultation is the time to discuss the outcome you’re hoping to achieve and what you can expect from your final results. You may find it helpful to bring examples of your ideal look.

Your options for breast implants, including the type, size, and placement, will also be discussed. You will determine whether saline or silicone implants will garner the best results for you. As a precaution, most women will also be required to have a mammogram screening done prior to surgery.

If you both decide to proceed with the surgery, your surgeoni will draft a customized surgical plan, which you can take to the patient concierge to schedule pricing and receive any pre-operative instructions.

What to Expect on the Day of Breast Augmentation Treatment

During surgery, the surgeon will make inconspicuous incisions to minimize visible scarring. Your incisions will depend on the type of implant you’ve chosen, the degree of your enlargement, and your anatomy. Once the incision is made, your breast implants will be inserted either under the pectoral muscle, in the case of a submuscular implant, or directly behind the breast tissue and over the muscle for a sub-mammary implant.

Once the implant has been set in its prime position, your surgery will close the incisions with sutures and place a compression bra.

Breast augmentation surgery typically takes 1 to 2 hours on average and without complications.

Breast Augmentation Recovery

How long the recovery period lasts will depend on the type of implant and methods used during surgery, as well as your natural healing speed. A week after surgery, most individuals can return to light activity and work if it is not physically demanding. The swelling and bruising should mostly be gone around 6 weeks. At this point, most clients can resume all normal activities without restrictions.
