What is PRP & PRF?

PRP and PRF are powerful anti-aging serums that revitalize your appearance without synthetic ingredients. While they are considered cutting-edge cosmetic solutions, platelet-rich plasma and platelet-rich fibrin are not new to the medical community. These autologous serums have been used extensively in specialties such as orthopedics and sports medicine to accelerate patient healing and recovery after injuries or surgeries. PRP and PRF both contain higher-than-normal amounts of platelets, which are parts of the blood with natural healing properties and other regenerative materials. Platelets trigger cellular turnover, tissue regrowth, and enhanced collagen and elastin production.

PRF is considered the “second-generation” of platelet therapy because it contains a higher number of platelets than PRP and additional elements, including white cells, growth factors, and stem cells. Higher concentrations of platelets offer more effective skin rejuvenation. Unlike PRP, which contains an anticoagulant to prevent blood from clotting too quickly, PRF is completely natural and contains no anticoagulant agents.

PRP and PRF are extremely versatile and used to treat a wide variety of aesthetic concerns, including the following:

  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Acne scarring
  • Uneven skin texture or tone
  • Generally dull-looking skin
  • Hair loss

What Are the Benefits of PRP & PRF?

Both PRP and PRF come with a range of key advantages that make them among the most versatile tools in the anti-aging arsenal. Benefits of PRP/PRF in San Clemente, Aliso Viejo, and Rancho Santa Margarita (Orange County), CA include:

  • Repairs and regenerates
  • Hydrates and replenishes
  • Boosts collagen and elastin production
  • Softens wrinkles and lines

  • Nourishes the scalp

  • Minimally invasive
  • Made from the patient’s own blood

Who Are the Best Candidates for PRP & PRF?

PRP and PRF are products derived from the patient’s blood sample, so they typically do not pose any risk of allergic reaction, making them safe and effective for most healthy people. However, they may not be suitable for patients with bleeding disorders or for those taking anti-clotting or blood-thinning medications. Our team in San Clemente, Aliso Viejo, and Rancho Santa Margarita will thoroughly consult to ensure that PRP and PRF will safely and effectively achieve your aesthetic goals.

Take the plunge

What’s the First Step?

The first step along your treatment journey is to meet with our friendly, knowledgeable practitioners for a private consultation in San Clemente, Aliso Viejo, or Rancho Santa Margarita (Orange County.) During this initial meeting, we will examine you physically, go over your health history and current medications, and ensure no contraindications are present. Once your candidacy for PRP and PRF is confirmed, we can create a personalized treatment plan that gets to the root of your concerns and leads to a more refreshed, attractive appearance with a better skin tone and thicker, healthier hair.

What to Expect on the Day of PRP & PRF Treatment

The processes to collect and produce PRP and PRF are similar. Both require a simple blood draw. The blood is then processed through a centrifuge, which separates its distinct parts. To create PRP serum, the blood sample is spun through the centrifuge at higher speeds, separating out the plasma and platelets. To create PRF serum, the blood sample is spun at lower speeds, leaving some of the white blood cells and stem cells within the platelet layer.

The serums are then drawn into syringes for use. Because PRF does not contain any clotting agents, the blood product must be used quickly after collection and processing. The anticoagulant agent in PRP allows for some wiggle room between the time the blood sample is collected and processed and the time it must be injected or applied to the skin or scalp.

During treatment, a member of our staff will draw blood from whichever arm you are comfortable with. If you are afraid of needles, please let us know, and we will make sure you are laid in a safe position. We will also use a numbing agent to make sure your treatment is seamless and pain-free. Once the PRP or PRF is ready, it can be applied to the skin or scalp to enhance youthfulness and vitality. Altogether, this process is usually accomplished within an hour. You will take multiple PRP and PRF treatments to see marked results. We will carefully schedule these treatments to maximize effectiveness and safety.

PRP & PRF Recovery

Patients often feel well enough to return to work the day after their PRP or PRF injections. You may experience some swelling at or near the injection sites. You can also expect the normal side effects of a blood draw: slight fatigue, bruising, and lightheadedness. Please ensure you are well-hydrated before and after your PRP/PRF treatments.

Expect to see results gradually over 3 to 6 months. Hair follicles are often very damaged when hair loss starts becoming evident, so your damaged follicles may need multiple PRP/PRF injection treatments and time to heal. You can expect better, longer-lasting results if you undergo regular maintenance treatments every 6 months after your initial round of treatments.

If your PRP or PRF treatment is paired with another procedure, such as laser treatments, dermal fillers, or microneedling, your recovery may be longer and require specific care. Our skincare experts will tell you what to expect after your PRP or PRF injections, and you can reach out with any questions or concerns you may have before or after your session.
